Job Summary The Thermite Welder is responsible for performing thermite welding and repairs on steel rail components to ensure the integrity and safety of railway tracks. This role includes managing track components, conducting inspections, and executing maintenance activities to support reliable rail operations. The position follows an 8-day-on-6 days off rotational schedule, requiring travel and work in outdoor environments under varying conditions. Major Responsibilities • Utilize thermite charge kits • Work safely with molten steel • Utilize high frequency tools • Weld and grind carbon steel and manganese track components • Inspect track work on completion and approve track • Maintain train operating restrictions in alignment with track standards • Remove and replace defective ties, rail spikes, and anchors • Correct deviations in track surface, alignment, and gauge • Install and repair street and railroad crossings • Unload and assist in unloading ballasts • Unload and distribute track material • Sort used track material for loading, which may be loaded by hand • Clean up after work completion • Comply with track safety standards, operating rules, and safe work procedures • Complete work, material inventory, and inspections reports Working Conditions • Must be available to work shifts, extensive hours. • Must be able to work outside the headquarters location, as needed • Ability to work outdoor in various types of weather conditions with regular exposure to dust, pollen, noise, and vibrations • Ability to use various common and specialized hand tools • Must be able to utilize a respirator for some tasks • Ability to perform repetitive physical activities • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds (22 kg) and up to 70 pounds (32 kg) occasionally • Must have good eye-hand coordination and grasping Requirements • Federal and provincial welding qualification or equivalent experience • High School Diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED) • Valid Driver's License, Class 3 in Quebec or equivalent in other provinces • Collaborates with others and shares information • Sets direction and inspires others • Demonstrates active listening Assets • Experience in similar working conditions • Knowledge of signals or Rail Operating Rules • Operator qualifications and experience • Experience and training in Mechanical • Post secondary trade education What We Offer • Competitive Wages and Benefits • Paid Training and Career Development • Medical, vision, and dental insurance • Defined Benefits Pension Plan • Employee Share Investment Plan • Educational Financial Assistance Program • Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) • Generous Employee Discount Program • Employee & Family Assistance Program (EFAP) • Telemedicine Service This position is a unionized position, as such pay and benefits are governed by the applicable Collective Agreement. Paid Training Successful candidates will take part in a paid four-week training program at a CN Campus (Winnipeg, MB) with additional on-the-job training to help ensure that they have received the adequate knowledge to operate in accordance with regulatory requirements and CN's safety standards. The training is primarily on health and safety rules, and successful completion of the classroom and on-the-job training is required to continue employment as a Thermite Welder at CN.
