# Traffic Signal Electrician / Traffic Systems Technician — Calgary, AB
Black & McDonald’s Alberta team is growing and we are looking for a committed, collaborative professional to join us. Reporting to the Project Manager or their designate, you will support the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of traffic signals, street lighting, and associated electronic and communication systems. You will work both independently and collaboratively across field and office environments, supporting preventative maintenance programs, system upgrades, and emergency response activities.
The ideal candidate is a Red Seal Journeyperson Electrician with strong experience in traffic signal systems, controller programming, and detection technologies. You should bring excellent problem-solving skills, a strong safety mindset, and the ability to work effectively in fast-paced, high-stakes environments.
### On a typical day you might
- Install, maintain, and repair traffic control signals, signalized crosswalks, street lighting systems, and vehicle/pedestrian detection devices.
- Troubleshoot electrical faults, communication failures, and detection issues to restore safe and reliable operation.
- Plan and schedule preventative maintenance for all electrical traffic control devices and maintain accurate written and digital records, including maintenance logs, inspections, timing plans, and reports.
- Configure, test, and wire traffic signal cabinets, intersections, crosswalks, and detection systems.
- Install and program communications equipment including radios, fibre optics, wireless, and cellular components.
- Program and update traffic controllers including Intelight, Econolite, PEEK, Trafficware, 170, and 2070 units in TS2 Type 1 and Type 2 configurations.
- Program and maintain traffic detection systems including Autoscope, Iteris, Wavetronix, Miovision, Traficam, loop detectors, pods, and PTZ cameras.
- Implement timing plan modifications and assist with new timing plan installations.
- Forecast material needs, order and stock spare components, and support inventory management within defined budgets.
- Ensure all work adheres to Canadian Electrical Code, municipal standards, and safety regulations, and participate in on-call rotations to respond to urgent electrical or traffic system issues.
### What we need from you
- Journeyperson Electrician (Red Seal) or equivalent certification recognized by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (required).
- IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician II (required); Technician III considered an asset.
- Master Electrician certification considered an asset.
- A minimum 5 years of experience in traffic signal installation, maintenance, or related electrical work is required.
- Experience with traffic controller programming and traffic detection technologies is expected.
- Experience working in municipal infrastructure, transportation systems, or similar environments is considered an asset.
- Experience supervising apprentices or leading small crews is considered an asset.
- Strong knowledge of traffic signal systems, detection technologies, and communication networks.
- Knowledge of Econolite and Intelight systems, NEMA standards, MUTCD guidelines, and DC power systems is important.
- Experience with networking, wireless communication, Ethernet, and fibre switching is required.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings is essential.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to work in both field and office settings are required, along with excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Proficiency with MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Project) is expected.
- A Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with clean abstract is required.
- Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in varying weather conditions, and be able to participate in on-call rotation and respond to emergency situations.
- Willingness and ability to join Local Union 424.
